Shop Small Businesses this Christmas: Australia 2020

No surprise, we all know this year has been the actual definition of shit. It’s been a shitty year and a lot of people have struggled emotionally, physically and financially. That’s why I’ve created this post for people who want to reach out and help out Australian small businesses.

Little Patch Creations

I just want to say that this gal is the queen of festival wear with cool fabrics and designs. It’s all customisable as well which means you get to pick which fabric you want for the item and the event. Which just makes it sooo much cooler in my eyes. Who doesn’t need a pair of groovy flares? I know I do and I want about five pairs.

Off the Book Pages

As their Instagram bio says it’s Australia’s first and only online bookstore for independently published books. I don’t think I need to mention anything else because that’s pretty cool.

Tina Maher Art

I’ve followed Tina on Instagram for years now, literally ever since her son told me to look at her art. Tina is based in my hometown of Townsville and I love her Townsville inspired stuff but she also does other really fun and colourful artworks. I know I’m doing a terrible job at explaining her artwork but all you need to know is it’s colourful and fun and you should hit the link to see what I mean.

The Oopsy Daisy Co

How can I explain The Oopsy Daisy Co prints? Fun, colourful, and very groovy. In my opinion these prints are perfect for a little bohemian home or nursery. I also want to mention that they do really cool wedding invitations as well.

Buck Wild Country

All I have to say is this bohemian country brand is really cool. In my opinion their designs are perfect for travelling, Rodeos or the 2021 CMC festival. I can just see myself road tripping through Australia wearing their designs and, honestly, what I’m picturing looks really cool. Also the kids collection is called little bucks and that’s just too cute.

Crystal and Stone

Crystals are cool ’nuff said. Jokes but also seriously. I feel like crystals are taking the world by storm at the moment and Crystal and Stone have an amazing collection of stones and styles. They have a beautiful Instagram page and a beautiful store in Western Australia. Plus they sent a really cute crystal sticker with my first order.

**Disclaimer: There are hundreds of small businesses throughout Australia that deserve to be a part of this post, however, these are businesses I have followed on Instagram for years. If you know of any other businesses you feel should be mentioned please feel free to link them below in the comments 🙂

My Goals for 2019

Goodbye 2018 and hellooooo 2019! This year is going to be a very exciting, interesting and busy NewYearsEveyear. I’m quitting full time work and starting full time study plus part time work. So here’s a couple of my goals for this year to keep me on the straight and narrow

  1. Pass all of my Uni subjects.
  2. Clean up my diet. I’ve been eating a lot of junk food and I feel like absolute shit because of it
  3. Stop buying cheap clothing. I’m so over Cotton On, it’s not funny. I mean I love them but the quality of clothing just isn’t there
  4. Go on at least two holidays. Whether they be in Australia or Overseas, just as long as I go somewhere

There we go guys, my goals for 2019. Hopefully, writing them down and publishing them will give me more incentive to see them through(Especially no. 1)

Looking Back on 2018

If you want you to check out my original 2018 resolution post you can here. However, I’m going to do a quick recap of them in this post and have a quick chat about how they went.

  1. Live more

I actually think I did alright with this one. I mean I didn’t get to crazy and do the whole yes man movie plot. But I’ve definitely accomplished more this year than previous years. For example, I joined a social netball team and then a soccer club. I’m so glad I did too because I made new friends and I started going out more. Which has led me to being more confident in myself. IMG_0380

2. Work Towards a Career

If you read my ‘Why I took a Week off work’ post you’ll know that I hate my job. Which is a full time position in a retail store. So basically, I started panicking about my career. But, then I started over thinking it. Which meant I was getting no where because I would think of something I would like to do and then I would talk myself out of it. So after months of thinking about it and talking about it I enrolled back into university to study Primary Education. Which, coincidentally, was my original choice before I decided to enrol in Nursing. (Which did not work out)

3. Build a Better Home

This was a hard one to describe even back in January when I wrote my first post. But basically, I was sick of feeling like I was just coming back to a house rather than a home. And, I think I did alright with this one. I got a bit better with my home routine, I added a few candles to the house and added a couple different ‘homely’ touches.

4. Travel More

IMG_0007I really didn’t do great at this one. In fact, I didn’t even do good. Besides a trip to the Gold Coast in January I haven’t travelled at all this year. Hopefully 2019 brings more travel plans

My Throwback pre Party Playlist

So, New Years Eve is literally just around the corner and I’m sure most of you have already got the night sNight Outorted. But what about your pre drink playlist?? How many times have you started drinking and someone goes ‘oooh, let’s play some music!’ and then proceeds to take about 30 minutes to find and stick with a playlist. Now, personally, I find the best songs to jam out to before heading out are the bangers from your past. Here are just a couple of my suggestions

Disclaimer, I was born in the late 90’s, so most of these songs are going to be of the 2008-2013 era.

Promiscuous – Nelly Furtado, Timbaland

I Like It – Enrique Iglesias

Its Raining Men – The Weather Girls

Tik Tok – Kesha

We Like To Party – Vengaboys

My Humps – The Black Eyed Peas

Good Girls Go Bad – Cobra Starship, Leighton Meester

So, there we have a couple of song suggestions that are guaranteed to get you 1. Excited for hitting the town and 2. get cha dance on. If you want to check out the rest of my song suggestions you can find them on my aptly named ‘Dance Jams‘ playlist on Spotify.

How to Make Christmas feel more ‘Christmassy’ as an Adult

It can’t just be me who finds Christmas as an Adult a little disappointing. In fact, I know it’s not just me. There seems to be this kind of limbo phase between Christmas as a kid and having kids where Christmas just gets, dare I say, a little bland. So, this year I’ve tried spicing it up a little and I think I’ve found a couple things that bring back a bit of the excitement.

Christmas Movie night with Drinking Games

Note, this isn’t going to be any fun if you or your friends don’t drink alcohol. Get a group of friends together and pick a few Christmas movies to watch and drink to. In my personal opinion, the perfect number of movies to watch is about 3. It should be a mix of a Christmas classic, a movie you all watched as kids and a new movie not a lot of you have seen. You can make up your own rules or google some ideas. I personally think the idea of putting a Santa hat on the corner of the TV and drinking every time it aligns to look like a character is wearing it sounds like fun.

Friendmas Dinner

Christmas is a time for appreciating your family and friends. Every year most people will have a big Christmas lunch or dinner with their family but what about your friends? Let them know you care by having a ‘Friendmas’ lunch or dinner in the lead up to Christmas day. After all, it’s your friends who get you through the working week.

Christmas light looking

Don’t be fooled you’re never too old to go light looking. Try and plan a time you and your friends can jump in a car and head to the most decorated suburbs in your town. I guarantee you, you’ll have a good time. Mostly because of all the gossiping you’ll do. But really, being adults we rarely get to just ‘hang out’.

Ginger Bread house decorating comp

For about 3 years myself and 2 of my closest friends would have a gingerbread house decorating competition. Before we all started working full time hours 😦.We would make our own gingerbread in our own time and make the icing together. Then we would stay up late trying to not only decorate, but keep our houses together and standing. They definitely weren’t masterpieces but they’re memories we look back on and still laugh about. Looking back, I’ve realised we never took any photos of our houses but I really highly recommend giving this one a go.

The Easy Gift Guide: For Her

Christmas Gift guide

1. Benefit Cosmetics Gift Packs

I love this idea as a gift for the make up lover in your life (or maybe a cheeky gift for yourself?) No, but seriously, this pack is awesome because to buy the mini mascara on it’s own is about $23. Which means for an extra $7 you get two extra products and I just think that’s awesome

2. OPI Mini 12 Pack

If you’re trying to find a gift for your nail polish loving friend, you should seriously consider this. For $49.95 you get a pack of 12 different shades of really good quality nail polish. To make it even cooler they also come in themed packs, like Grease or The Nutcracker

3. Scented Candles

I’m pretty sure everyone loves a good scented candle and, through experience, I love Dusk. I think they’re scents and quality of candles are really good and I would personally love to be gifted one

4. A Candle Care Kit

This is a kind of ‘I do need one but I don’t want to buy it myself’ kind of gift. If you’re into candles you kind of need a care kit, just to make your life a tad bit easier. So if you know a candle lover you should really consider this

5. Mimco Passport Cover

The perfect gift for the traveller in your life. I love this Mimco design but there’s a lot of others you can choose from as well. Some you can even personalise or getting matching luggage tags for.

6. Morphe 6-piece Eye Brush Set

I haven’t personally tried these brushes, but for $27 I think these would make a great gift (or another cheeky treat yo’self gift)

7. Lonely Planet Travel Book

This is another gift for the traveller in your life. Not only is it full of cool trip ideas but it would make a pretty cool coffee table book as well

8. Body Shop Lip Balm

Body shop lip balm is the cheapest item on the list at $6 a tub but they’re awesome. They’re cruelty free, come in a range of different scents and I’ve never heard a bad word against them. I 100% recommend them

I hope this guide helps a bit guys, let me know what you think!

What is Christmas in Australia?

Similar to my ‘What is Halloween in Australia?’ post this is all about the best time of the year. Christmas! (Sing Christmas). Obviously, unlike Halloween Australia celebrates Christmas but during summer. So it’s hot and different to the carols. Like, you know the carol about it being cold outside? In Australia it’d be about getting heat stroke. So, because of that I thought it would be kind of interesting to do a post with what I think is a bit different about Christmas and Australia

  1. The Beach

Some families in Australia opt to have Christmas lunch or dinner as a BBQ by the beach. Of course, it’s normally quite hot so some people will just head to down for a swim and have lunch in the comfort of their air conditioned homes as well.

2. The Food

A big part of Christmas is the food, right?  In Australia most families will still have the roast meat and roast vegetables but will include cooler foods as well. This includes a salad option and there’s almost always some kind of sea food on the table. Usually prawns, here’s a link to a recipe I’ve found online

3. No Christmas Sweaters

As mentioned before during December it’s hot. So of course there’s no ugly Christmas sweater tradition, just funny Christmas shirts. Or in the last few years there’s been the new Christmas rashie’s, affectionately named ‘The Ugly Xmas Rashie’ (a rashie is a swimming shirt you use to protect yourself from getting sunburnt). As you can see, the design is unmistakably Australian (I love it).

You can get one here

4 . Christmas Decorations

Another one of my favourite things to see at Christmas time is the beachy/Australian vibe Christmas decorations have taken on. Santa can be seen with a sleigh pulled by kangaroos, surfing or chilling out with his board shorts and hawaiian shirt on underneath a palm tree

One of my own decorations

So, that’s what I think kind of stands out to make an ‘Australian Christmas’. What do you guys think? Or are you from another country and have your own Christmas traditions? Let me know in the comments

Why I Took a Week Off Work

I’ll begin this post by saying I work in retail. Full time.

Retail is not mentally challenging but it is mentally exhausting. Not only can it be incredibly boring during quiet times but the whole standing up for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week gets old real quick. However, it’s the nasty customers who come in and think they can treat you like dirt that’s probably the icing on the cake. Now with that beautifully coloured picture I just painted for you, you can imagine why I took this week off. You can also imagine how badly I needed the week off.

For a while now, I’ve been feeling my mental health slipping. With questions like ‘when will I figure out what I want to do?’ ‘When will I be able to leave this place?’ And to top it, the same bloody routine every bloody week. Anybody’s mental health would start slipping, honestly. During my week off though I threw routine out the window. I woke up when I wanted, went to the beach nearly every day and watched videos on unsolved mysteries. (Check out Bella Fiori on youtube). Best of all though, I can feel myself being more positive.

Basically, I’m writing this post because I want to remind you guys it’s okay to take time off. In fact, not only is it okay but it can be a necessity. So without thinking about it too much book in your leave!

What is Halloween in Australia?

I just want to start this post by saying, I feel ripped off. Ripped off because I never got to experience Halloweespooky-halloween-background-with-pumpkins-in-a-cemetery_1048-3055n as a kid.  As a 20 something year old Australian born in the 90’s halloween was a weird holiday for me. Well, actually it just didn’t exist outside of Disney and Nickelodeon. Being raised watching American tv shows and halloween re-runs during October left me, and many other kids, wishing Halloween was an Australian holiday.

However, because us kids have grown up we’ve almost brought Halloween into Australia. Of course, being Australian, that basically means we use it as an excuse to dress up and get drunk. But I thought I’d still write a small list of what it’s like if you’re an Australian who likes Halloween (and really wants it to be a thing).

  • Only seeing one or two Halloween decorations in town and getting overly excited
  • Constantly having people ask you what day Halloween actually is
  • Always listening to the older generation talk about how stupid Halloween is and remind you it’s not Australian
  • Being jealous of all the kids that get to go trick or treating now
  • Trying to convince your friends to do something for Halloween
  • Seriously considering buying the overpriced Halloween pumpkins from Coles
  • Watching youtuber vlogs (Zoe Sugg especially) about Halloween and being extremely jealous

And, there we have it. Let me know what you think and if you have anything to add or tell me what Halloween is like in your country!

Hi friends,

I’ve been reading everyone’s resolutions for the new year and I’ve decided that I want to share mine too. Not only so I remember them but to hold myself accountable as well.

P.S. I know I’m a week late but I promise I wrote these at 12:01am on the 1st of the 1st.

  • Travel more- This is an obvious one for me and is on my list every year.
  • Live more- This really just means pushing my fears aside and saying yes more.
  • Work towards a career- Honestly, I don’t even know what that career’s going to be. But, as long as I’m working towards something I want to do, I’ll be happy.
  • Build a better home- This one’s a bit different and honestly, I don’t even know how to explain it.

So, there we have it folks. Tune in 358 days from now to see how I go.
